Mária Patakyová was elected the Public Defender of Rights on 8 February 2017 and assumed the office by taking the oath before the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic on 29 March 2017 with a period up to 29 March 2022.

In the third term of office, former President of the District Court in Banská Bystrica and Member of the National Council in 2010-2012 Jana Dubovcová was elected by the National Council of the Slovak Republic by 76 votes. She assumed her position by taking the oath in the hands of the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic on 28 March 2012.

Historically, the first Public Defender of Rights became Pavel Kandráč, elected by the National Council of the Slovak Republic on 19 March 2002. He assumed his position by taking the oath in the hands of the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic on 27 March 2002.
